Utah State Legislators Will Wait to Propose Abortion Ban

Conservative Utah state legislators will wait to propose legislation that would ban abortion in the state because of the anticipated cost involved in legally defending an abortion ban. Instead, three Republican state representatives plan to introduce a bill that would create a legal defense fund to be used to cover the costs of defending a future ban. Any donations to the fund would be used solely for this purpose. State Representative Carl Wimmer told the Salt Lake Tribune that “we are looking at wanting to ban abortion in Utah, period, end of story. However, we want to do it correctly…we’re not going to back away from abortion. We’re never going to let it die.” The lawmakers originally announced plans in October 2008 to sponsor anti-choice legislation in the 2009 legislative session. Among other provisions, the series of bills were intended to ban abortion except in cases of incest, rape, or endangerment of maternal health, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.
