Virginia state Delegate Bob Marshall (R) stated at an anti-choice press conference last Thursday that disabled children are a punishment from God for abortion. Marshall said, “The number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion with handicaps has increased dramatically. Why? Because when you abort the first born of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children.” He continued, “In the Old Testament, the first born of every being, animal and man, was dedicated to the Lord. There’s a special punishment Christians would suggest,” reported the News Leader. The press conference itself was held to oppose state funding of Planned Parenthood, which Marshall has insisted should be called “Planned Barrenhood,” according to WY Daily. It was sponsored by a group called Virginia Christian Action and attended by mostly Christian pastors and clergy. Marshall has since apologized for his remarks and stated in a press release that he regrets “any misimpression my poorly chosen words may have created as to [his] deep commitment to fighting for these vulnerable children and their families.”
