WA Governor Voices Support for Gay Marriage

In a speech yesterday, Washington Governor Chris Gregoire indicated her support for gay marriage. Governor Gregoire stated, “it’s time, it’s the right thing to do, and I will introduce a bill to do it. I say that as a wife, a mother, a student of the law, and above all as a Washingtonian with a lifelong commitment to equality and freedom. Some say domestic partnerships are the same as marriage. That’s a version of the discriminatory ‘separate but equal’ argument.”

Democrats are the majority in both chambers of the Washington state legislature, although a bill is not guaranteed to pass given that some conservative Democrats have expressed reservations about gay marriage, Reuters reports.

Currently, New Jersey, Illinois, Rhode Island, Delaware, and Hawaii recognize same-sex civil unions. Same-sex couples can obtain marriage licenses in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, and Washington DC.
