The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) will grant actor Whoopi Goldberg its Vanguard award on April 17 in Los Angeles for her positive portrayals of African-American lesbians in films including “The Color Purple” and “Boys on the Side.” A GLAAD spokesperson noted, “On the big screen, this is an almost invisible part of our diverse community.”
GLAAD’s Vanguard Award honors members of the entertainment or media community who have made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for lesbians and gay men. Past recipients of the award include Cher, Cristina Saralegui, Roseanne, Sid Sheinberg, Aaron Spelling and Steven Tisch.
