Woman Denied Life-Saving Abortion

The Center for Reproductive Law and Policy has filed suit against the Louisiana State University Medical Center for refusing to perform an abortion on a woman whose life was threatened by her pregnancy.

The Medical Center allegedly told 27-year-old Michelle Lee that she could not obtain an abortion unless her risk of dying from her pregnancy was more than 50%. Lee is a mother of two who has a severely damaged heart and is awaiting a heart transplant. After being refused an abortion in Louisiana, Lee traveled to Texas for the life-saving procedure.

In additional to charging the Medical Center with violating Lee’s constitutional rights, the suit charges that the Center also violated a federal Medicaid law which requires states to provide abortions when pregnancy threatens a patient’s life.
