Mary Hutto was so frugal she lived in the hallway of the boardinghouse she owned. Upon her death, she gave $3.5 million to her alma mater, Western Kentucky University. Hutto amassed her fortune while making a living as a teacher both in Florida and in her native Kentucky. The endowment will give 70 students approximately $2,500 each annually. Hutto’s intention was to give these awards to students who showed strong academic skills and leadership potential, but who might not fit the qualifications for the University’s top scholarships.
