Women Win Top Spots in South Africa Police Service

For the first time in South Africa’s history, two women have been appointed to the rank of divisional commissioner in the country’s police service, the largest in the world. Magda Stander is the new Commissioner of Personnel Services and Dr. Mala Singh is the new Commissioner of Career Management.

The appointments came following pressure from various groups to increase the number of women and black South Africans in the higher levels of the police force. The Commission on Gender Equality has praised the appointments. Although South African women have a long way to go in achieving full equality, South Africa has been credited with having one of the most progressive constitutions in the world.
