Women’s Rights Leaders Announce Action Plan to Save Roe

Women’s rights leaders held a press conference today announcing a plan of action to save reproductive freedom and protect women’s access to birth control, abortion, and other reproductive health services. “We will not go back to days of back-alley abortions where women will die,” said Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF). “We’ve fought too long and hard for safe, legal and accessible abortion. The women’s community is not going to sit quietly and watch President Bush chisel away at our fundamental reproductive rights,” continued Smeal. “This emergency action is just the beginning. We are here for the long haul and we intend to win. We will not be the generation who both won and lost Roe v. Wade.” Smeal was joined by Patricia Ireland, President of the National Organization of Women, along with Gloria Feldt of Planned Parenthood, Alice Germond of NARAL, Francis Kissling of Catholics for a Free Choice and Rosemary Dempsey of the Center for Reproductive Law and Policy. “With an anti-choice President, an anti-choice Congress, and Supreme Court nominations possible as soon as this summer, women’s rights and women’s lives are in jeopardy,” said Smeal. “Women will not return to the days of unsafe, back-alley abortions. We won’t be the generation who both won and lost Roe v. Wade.”
