The National Organization for Women (NOW) and other women’s rights activists will protest President Bush’s signing of a bill banning abortion procedures today in Washington, DC. “As George W. Bush signs the deceptively-named Partial-Birth Abortion Ban into law, women’s rights activists across the country will be recommitting ourselves to keeping abortion safe, legal and accessible,” said National Organization for Women (NOW) President Kim Gandy. “Here in Washington, NOW will be protesting outside the site where the bill is signed. We won’t stand by silently as this Administration attempts to erode our rights.”
Pro-choice groups have already filed lawsuits to prevent the law from taking effect. Bans on abortion procedures such as these aim to outlaw or significantly chip away at a woman’s right to choose a safe and legal medical procedure. In 2000, the US Supreme Court overturned a similar Nebraska ban in Stenburg v. Carhart, citing the lack of a health exception. The federal ban that will become law today also does not include a health exception.
