Women’s Rights Groups Announce National Pro-Choice March

Today the nation’s leading women’s rights groups announced they have joined forces to organize an historic march on Washington to protect a woman’s right to choose. Organized by the Feminist Majority, the National Organization for Women (NOW), NARAL Pro-Choice America and Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), Save Women’s Lives: March for Freedom of Choice is set for April 25, 2004. Efforts to mobilize supporters of abortion rights are already underway.

Speaking this morning to a packed room at the National Press Club, Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority; Kim Gandy, president of the National Organization for Women; Gloria Feldt, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America; and Kate Michelman, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America joined a half dozen leaders from other progressive groups in denouncing the latest attacks on choice. With the White House and the majority of Congress aligned in anti-choice lockstep, the federal judiciary being packed with judges hostile to women’s rights, state legislatures chipping away at a woman’s right to a safe and legal abortion, and the US Supreme Court hanging in the balance as rumors of impending resignations persist, the threat to reproductive rights is grave. Despite all this, poll after poll indicates that the majority of Americans are pro-choice.

“Everywhere that I go in this country people come up and ask me: ‘When are we going to march again?’ The time is now. We must sound the alarm that women’s fundamental rights are in danger,” said Eleanor Smeal, president, Feminist Majority. “The overwhelming majority of Americans will not go back to the days of back alley abortions.”
