Retailer Mervyn’s California and the Women’s Sports Foundation will jointly offer more than $300,000 in scholarships to high school girls this July.
Scholarship recipients will be selected based on their participation in athletics, their academic performance, their history of community service, and their financial need. Two hundred and eighty senior high school girls will be awarded $1,000 prizes, three will receive $5,000, and one will receive the $10,000 grand prize. The scholarship money must be applied toward college tuition.
Applications for the Mervyn’s California/Women’s Sports Foundation Scholarship Fund are due on April 17 and are available at all Mervyn’s stores or by calling the Women’s Sports Foundation at 1-800-227-3988.
Together with its parent company, the Dayton Hudson Corporation, Mervyn’s California donates more than $1 million a week to the communities in which its stores are located. Mervyn’s president Bart Butzer stated, “Mervyn’s actively supports women and strongly encourages girls everywhere to strive to be the best they can be.”
