Zimbabwean President Attacks Gays and Lesbians

President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe attacked gays and lesbians in a speech yesterday. Mugabe, speaking at the home of a state-owned newspaper editor who died Tuesday, said that wild animals are better than gays and lesbians because the animals can tell the difference between the sexes.

Last December Mugabe condemned the World Conference of Churches for allowing the Gays and Lesbians Association of Zimbabwe to participate. Mugabe’s administration drew controversy and worldwide concern when it banned the Association from participating in the 1995 Zimbabwe International Book Fair.
