Trump’s FDA Pick Raises Concerns Over Science, Abortion Access, and Food Safety

On Wednesday, August 19, President Trump announced that he will nominate Dr. Heidi Overton as the new Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner. Overton’s nomination comes as the country battles a multistate cyclospora outbreak, which continues to raise serious concerns about the health and safety of the nation’s food supply.

If she is confirmed, she would succeed former FDA commissioner Dr. Marty Makary, who resigned in May 2026 after facing heavy criticism from the Trump administration and anti-abortion organizations for not restricting access to mifepristone and for his handling of drug and vaccine approvals. At a time when the FDA has come under political pressure, it is clear that the nation’s health and well-being are no longer a primary concern.

Overton is a double board-certified physician in public health and general preventive medicine. She currently serves as a senior White House health policy aide and has made no secret of her conservative stance during her tenure. In fact, Overton is a strong supporter of Trump’s health agenda, especially regarding the childhood vaccine schedule and restrictions on access to mifepristone. She also supports the false narrative that the current vaccine schedule’s timing may be a cause of rising rates of autism spectrum disorder. However, no medical evidence confirms any such link. Nevertheless, Overton has encouraged blue states to adopt these “gold standard” recommendations.

Despite Trump’s support for Overton, whom he believes is the “rockstar” and the right person to serve as the new FDA commissioner, many rightly question her qualifications to lead across the aisle. To be confirmed by the Senate, Overton must gain approval from the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee

Committee Chair Sen. Bill Cassidy, an avid critic of Trump’s position on vaccines, has already expressed his disapproval of Overton. Democratic committee member Sen. Patty Murray believes that Overton is a “far-right, anti-abortion extremist who has no business leading the FDA.” Additionally, as cases of the cyclospora outbreak continue to spike, the nation still needs an experienced professional; no record shows that Overton is particularly well known for food safety issues.

Unfortunately, a recurring theme among the administration’s nominations, agency leaders, and appointees is the continued failure to equate experience with education. Although Overton is a medical professional, she does not believe in “sound science.” Instead, Overton is a medical professional willing to let partisan politics stand in the way of the nation’s health and safety.
