SUNY NEW PALTZ Exposes Local Fake Clinic

In support of truth and equality, and in response to an article praising a local “Pregnancy Support Center,” the SUNY NEW PALTZ FMLA recently spoke out against these fake clinics in a letter published in their campus paper, oracle.newpaltz.edu/print.cfm?a_id=482, describing these centers as “nothing more than a disguised, non-medical, anti-choice religious service that preaches against abortion, birth-control and pre-marital sex.” Congratulations SUNY NEW PALTZ on educating your campus on the real agenda of these centers, informing your peers about legitimate medical resources in her community, and extending an opportunity for students to get involved in FMLA activities. Registrations Soar for the Never Go Back Student Conference!

Students from across the country are traveling as far west as Alaska and as far south as Florida to come together for what will be the historic Never Go Back National Student Leadership Conference in Washington DC on Jan 22 and 23 to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

The UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA AT OMAHA Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance are organizing a special formal dinner and fundraising event with special guest speaker Dr. Leroy Carhart. Carhart successfully challenged Nebraska’s late term abortion ban in the U.S. Supreme Court in 2000, and with 97 percent of counties in Nebraska without abortion clinics, is one of a few keeping abortion available in the state. The group plans on using the event to not only fundraise for a large delegation to attend the Never Go Back conference, but also to educate their campus on the threats to Roe v. Wade and screen the Never Go Back video. The group has also organized a pay equity bake sale to fundraise for the conference and received campus press for this action. Check out the article in the Feminist Journalist Center.

Leadership Alliances, affiliates, and many feminist groups are receiving discretionary conference funding from their student government organizations and additional support from the Women’s Studies and progressive departments and programs. The Women’s Studies department at EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY is providing support for 10 students from the Women’s Activist Group, an FMLA affiliate, to attend the Never Go Back Student Leadership Conference. Coming all the way from Atlanta, Georgia, the SPELMAN FMLA is receiving support from their Women’s Studies department to send a delegation of 6 members to the conference. The KEENE STATE Women’s Studies department is sponsoring a delegation of 13 to attend the conference. We are thrilled to meet with all who are able to come!

The BOSTON UNIVERSITY FMLA plans on bringing a delegation to the conference. Their campus paper, the Student Underground recently covered the Never Go Back campaign.

The VASSAR FMLA plans on sending a large delegation to the conference. In addition, the group is signing on to the Never Go Back campaign as an action team, and has collected 730 signatures on the authorization petition.

Dozens of Feminist Majority Leadership Alliances, affiliates, and feminist student groups have already registered to attend, including groups from the following campuses:

AMERICAN UNIVERSITY, BOSTON UNIVERSITY, CONNECTICUT COLLEGE, EAST TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY, EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY, GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY, GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY, GUILFORD COLLEGE, INDIANA UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA, JOHN JAY COLLEGE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE, KEENE STATE, LEHIGH UNIVERSITY, NORTHEASTERN ILLINIOS UNIVERSITY, OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY, SKIDMORE COLLEGE “UNIVERSITY WITHOUT WALLS,” SPELMAN COLLEGE, SAINT MARY’S COLLEGE OF MARYLAND, SUNY-PURCHASE, UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST, UNC CHAPEL HILL, UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA-ANCHORAGE, UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT SAN DIEGO, UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO, UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND BALTIMORE COUNTY, UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA, UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS, UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH, UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA, UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MILWAUKEE, WELLESLEY COLLEGE, XAVIER UNIVERSITY and many more expected!

Prescribe Choice Hits Fever Pitch: Emergency Contraception Action Day and More Activism!

The Feminist Majority Foundation’s Emergency Contraception Over-the-Counter (ECOTC) campaign is petitioning the Food and Drug Administration to allow women to access EC over the counter without a prescription so that it can be easily and quickly accessible to all women in the United States. The December 7th National Day of Action for the ECOTC Campaign was a success! Students across the country took part in a collective action, petitioning and educating their communities about the campaign to show support for EC. Outreaching to their community, the TEXAS WOMAN’S UNIVERSITY FMLA collected over one hundred signatures for our petition to the Food and Drug Administration. FMF interns, volunteers, and campus staff in our Washington D.C. area collected 461 EC OTC signatures while petitioning a high traffic marketplace. Over the course of the semester, the UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL FLORIDA FMLA collected over 600 signatures while tabling for the ECOTC campaign. At their annual “Freedom Fest” concert fundraiser, the SUNY STONY BROOK raised over $1500 to processing rape kits at a local hospital and educated for increased access to Emergency Contraception for rape and sexual assault survivors. According to Christine Tanaka, FMLA leader, “It was an amazing event… the turnout was great and everyone was just really enthusiastic.” The group also collected ECOTC petitions during the event and sold t-shirts, bumper stickers, and buttons. Feminists across the country continue to keep up the struggle to make EC available over-the-counter! Post this online petition to your listserv and recommend the petition to your friends. Check out the new Campus Health Center Survey to affect Campus Health Center Policy. For further assistance, contact the ECOTC Coordinator.

George Washington FMLA Hosts Panel Discussion on Feminism and Race

It was standing room only last month, during the GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY FMLA discussion on the future of feminist activism and race, culture, class, and age. Over one hundred students and community activists attended the GWU FMLA, Women’s Advocates to Terminate Sexism (WATTS), and Positive Force DC sponsored event. The panel featured Heather Booth, the original “Jane” the underground Abortion Counseling Service while a student at the University of Chicago in the 1960’s; Sirena Riley, former FMF Campus Co-Director and *Colonize This!* contributor; and Asantewaa Nkrumah Ture, civil and labor rights activist. This is the first of many discussions to take place on campus about race, class, gender, youth, and feminism. Great work!

Indiana U at Bloomington FMLA Thanks Local Doctors that Prescribe EC

To show appreciation for feminist doctors, the INDIANA UNIVERSITY AT BLOOMINGTON FMLA made Thank You cards for all the doctors that prescribe emergency contraception (EC) in their community. In many states across the country doctors and pharmacists are allowed to “opt out” of prescribing and dispensing EC if they choose, making access difficult and even impossible for many women. Wal-Mart, increasingly the only pharmacy in rural areas, does not dispense EC as a matter of corporate policy Visit the ECOTC campaign website for more information, to sign the petition of support, and for action ideas.

Title IX Updates from San Diego Hearing

The last in a series of public hearings on Title IX, the 1972 law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in federally funded education, took place last week in San Diego, California. Attendees at the first day of the hearing packed the ballroom of a downtown San Diego hotel. Over 40 young feminists from the UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA-SAN DIEGO (UCSD) FMLA provided a strong young women’s presence, both at the hearing and at a rally during the lunch break. “This is not only about equal opportunity for women in sports,” stated Michelle Wood, West Coast Director of the Feminist Majority Foundation’s Campus Program. “This is first and foremost about achieving equality for women. We must preserve Title IX to ensure equality for women and girls in all areas of life.” The UCSD FMLA has received tremendous support by their University, including a recent Associated Student Body unanimous vote for the adoption of the FMLA’s pro-Title IX resolution. Additionally, the FMLA received university funding to caravan students to the downtown San Diego hearings and to produce materials and T-shirts. Through their Title IX activism, the UCSD FMLA has affected campus policy campus and institutionalized a feminist platform on campus that fully supports women in sports. MORE >>

Title IX Updates from Campuses Nationwide

The Bush Administration has created the “Commission on Opportunity in Athletics” to evaluate whether the current standards Title IX of the Education Act that apply to athletic participation should be revised and how. The purpose of the Commission’s report could severely undermine Title IX and the gains women have made in athletics. Leadership Alliances and feminists across the country have organized campaigns and shown support for women in sports by sending testimonies and letters of support for Title IX to the Commission on Opportunity in Athletics.

The INDIANA UNIVERSITY AT BLOOMINGTON FMLA created a letter/email of support that their members forwarded to friends, family, coaches, and any other females that have participated in school sports and sent 23 testimonies of support to the Commission!

Earlier this semester, the FMLA at the UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA AT OMAHA created supportive palm cards for Title IX and Women’s sports that they passed out during the campus volleyball games. They used the palm cards to show support for women athletes on campus and to raise consciousness about the threats to Title IX by the current administration.

As part of their efforts, the VASSAR FMLA mailed out 305 letters to the Commission in support of Title IX. Thanks to all of the FMLAs and activists involved in supporting women and girls in sports!
